You’ll see what seems like an endless number of custom cars, pickup trucks, SUVs and motorcycles on the road. What we don’t see enough of are custom big rigs like this 2020 Peterbilt 389. The team of mobile enhancement experts at NET Audio in Wichita Falls, Texas, was asked to assist in upgrading this truck with a sound system that would stand out as much as the amazing chassis, cab, engine and paint modifications by Red Dirt Diesel Power. The Peterbilt was built for Shawn Gibson Truck in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Let’s see what the NET Audio team created for this one-off 900-horsepower highway hauler.
The Driver’s Compartment
The NET Audio team started the upgrades on this Peterbilt by installing a Kenwood single-DIN CD receiver in the dash and running the preamp outputs to three Wavtech LinkDQ line drivers to boost the voltage.
Looking up from the windshield, you can see four DD Audio VO-XN6.5a, high-efficiency coaxial speakers. The speakers are mounted to the overhead storage compartment and trimmed with an LED-illuminated acrylic trim ring. A secondary acrylic ring that has been upholstered is layered on top and held in place with stainless steel fasteners. The team mounted another pair of the DD Audio speakers in the stock lower speaker location in the B-pillar.
The Sleeper
Never let it be said that this Peterbilt doesn’t have enough bass. The NET Audio team constructed two large subwoofer enclosures that replace the closets in the sleeper. Each ported enclosure is home to a pair of DD Audio 3500-Series 3512 12-inch subwoofers. Each subwoofer can handle as much as 1,200 watts of power with peak power input rated at a jaw-dropping 4,800 watts. The enclosures feature the same LED-illuminated acrylic as the front speakers.
Three more pair of DD Audio VO-Series speakers are mounted on panels above the bed so that the vocals are audible above the massive array of subwoofers.
Peterbilt Stereo System Amplifiers
Three DD Audio amplifiers power the sound system. A monster-sized DD Audio M4000 amplifier mounted to the front edge of the bed powers the subwoofers. The M4000 can deliver up to 4,000 watts to the quartet of subwoofers. A pair of DD Audio D4.125 four-channel amplifiers are mounted on either side of the subwoofer amp to feed the front and rear speakers with at least 100 watts per driver. The amplifiers and line drivers are connected with custom DD Audio interconnect cabling.
The NET Audio team created a custom shroud to conceal the amplifier wiring. Of course, it also includes LED illumination around each amp. The audio system has more than 100 feet of 5K white LED illumination alone.
Show Truck Delivers the DJ Experience
If you attend truck shows in Texas or Oklahoma, you might have seen this classic black and green Peterbilt displayed at the Mid-America Trucking Show or the Busted Knuckle Truck Show. Reports are clear that it’s a fan favorite everywhere it goes, and the stereo system has no problem ensuring that everyone at the event can enjoy some great music.
