The owner of this 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder contacted The Car Audio Shop in St. Louis to inquire about upgrading the audio system. As much as he loves the sound of the 5.2-liter, 631 horsepower V-10 engine, the factory-installed audio system doesn’t have enough power or adequate speakers to drown out the exhaust and drivetrain noise. Brandon Green and Dan Castro met with the client to discuss the expectations for the system, then presented the upgrade solution you see here. The client approved their plan, and the team set to work integrating an audio system worthy of this amazing supercar.
Establish a Solid Foundation: SoundShield Sound Deadening
The goal was to upgrade the speakers in the car with new drivers from Hybrid Audio Technologies and power them with an ARC Audio ARC 1000.4 amplifier that includes the IPS8.8 digital signal processor. To maximize the performance of the speakers, Dan and Brandon started by removing the trim panels from the doors and applying a layer of SoundShield sound deadening to the inner and outer skins.
Once the doors were prepared, the team created a set of mounting adapter plates out of expanded PVC plastic to allow the Hybrid Audio Unity 6×9-inch midbass drivers to be installed in the doors. A set of matching tweeters were integrated into the stock speaker locations on either end of the dash.
Deliver the Power: ARC Audio DSP Amplifier
The stereo system in this Huracán is powered by a four-channel ARC Audio ARC1000.4 that’s equipped with the IPS8.8 digital signal processor. The amplifier is rated to produce 250 watts from each of its four channels, so there won’t be any shortage of power for the new speakers. Dan started the integration process by using an audio signal analyzer to check the frequency response on the output of the factory audio system. After confirming that the signal was usable in terms of bandwidth and frequency response, he connected it to the inputs on the IPS8.8 signal processor.
The ARC Audio amplifier is mounted on the floor in the front storage compartment, and the top of the amp is visible through a window in the carpeted trim panel.
With the amp in place and wired into the vehicle, Dan set to work configuring the crossovers, speaker pathlength adjustments and finally, the equalizer settings for each driver to create a realistic and detailed soundstage that spans the width of the vehicle. Executing this process with precision is paramount to the audio system’s ability to deliver smooth and natural-sounding frequency response and fantastic imaging.
